Hermann the “Hampelmann” free pattern of the month

 “HERMANN”

Disclaimer: If you are giving this toy to a baby you might not want to put on the bell!

US size 2, 40 “ circular needles

leftover sock yarn (in this case sunshine yarns minis leftovers)

 Head:

Leaving an 8 inch tail, cast on 10 stitches, join in the round (magic loop method) careful not to twist the stitches.

Knit one round.

Next round increase every other stitch (adding 5 stitches).

Knit one round.

Next round increase every stitch for a total of 30 stitches.

Knit about 12 to 14 rounds (use your own judgement on how big you want the head to be).

Now fill head with poly-fill before decreasing.

First decrease round: (k1, k2tog) to end of round = 20 sts

Knit one round.

Second decrease round: (k2tog) to end of round = 10 sts

Knit one round.

Third decrease round: (k2tog) to end of round = 5 sts

Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts.

 Arms:

With same color as head:

Cast on 4 sts, join in the round (magic loop method) careful not to twist.

Knit one round.

Next round increase in every stitch = 8 sts.

Knit one round.

Next round increase in every stitch = 16 sts.

Knit one round.

Next round increase 4 sts evenly: (k4, m1) to end of round = 20 sts.

Knit 5 rounds.

With next color knit 1, slip 1 all the way around. (That gives you the fake fair isle look).

Second round slip 1st stitch to avoid jog in color change.

Knit 5 more rounds.

At this point put some stuffing in the hand and with yarn sinch between hand and arm.

Switch color the same way and knit 8 more rounds.

Switch color again the same way and knit 3 more rounds.

Switch color again the same way and knit 10 more rounds.

Now fill arm with some stuffing to halfway point of last color and sinch there.

Switch color again and knit 3 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 8 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 5 more rounds.

Fill second arm with stuffing.

Switch to hand color and knit 5 more rounds, then start decreasing:

1st decrease round: (k3, k2tog) to end of round = 16 sts

knit one round

Fill hand with stuffing.

2nd decrease round: (k2tog) to end of round = 8 sts

knit one round

3rd decrease round: (k2tog) to end of round = 4 sts

Cut yarn and pull through remaining stitches.

Sinch second hand with yarn.

 Legs:

With shoe color cast on 4 sts, join in round (magic loop method) careful not to twist.

Knit one round.

1st increase round: increase in every stitch = 8 sts

Knit one round.

2nd increase round: increase in every stitch = 16 sts

Knit one round.

3rd increase round: increase in every other stitch: = 24 sts

Knit 8 more rounds.

Switch color as for arms and knit 6 more rounds.

Fill shoe with stuffing and sinch with yarn.

Switch color and knit 4 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 7 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 3 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 12 more rounds.

Fill leg with stuffing and sinch with yarn at halfway point of last color.

Switch color and knit 3 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 7 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 4 more rounds.

Switch color and knit 6 more rounds.

Switch to shoe color and knit 8 more rounds.

Fill leg and sinch with yarn between shoe and leg.

1st decrease round: (k1, k2tog) to end of round = 16 sts

knit one round

fill shoe with stuffing

2nd decrease round: (k2tog) to end of round = 8 sts

knit one round

3rd decrease round: (k2tog) to end of round = 4 sts

Cut yarn and pull through remaining stitches.

 Bow tie:

Cast on 11 stitches and knit in garter stitch for 16 rows.

Bind off, weave in ends and gather in the middle.

 Hat:

Cast on 30 sts, join in round (magic loop method) and knit 8 rounds.

Switch color as for arms.

Note: switch colors as often as you like and make hat as long as you like.

Decrease in the back every so often with a double decrease meaning:

slip 1 stitch, knit next 2 sts together and pull slipped stitch over

When you have 4 or 5 stitches left, cut yarn and pull through remaining stitches.
